Scientific Program

The scientific theme of this meeting is the "Transport of Materials in the Dynamic Earth". Session topics are interdisciplinary, and are designed to promote cross-fertilization of ideas among geochemists, mineral physicists, and seismologists. We have planned six topical sessions, each of which will include two formal lectures, a 45 minute talk by a keynote speaker, and a 20 minute talk by a person that will also serve as the session chair. After the formal talks in each session, there will be an extensive discussion period for which we will coordinate a number of short presentations of new results by individuals from each "community". At present, the program is as follows:

• Session 1. Imaging the mantle
• Keynote: Yoshio Fukao, Earthquake Research Institute, Univ. Tokyo
• Chair: Guy Masters, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UCSD
  
• A session to address recent progress in mapping mantle domains using global seismic tomography.
  
  
• Session 2. Formation and evolution of geochemical reservoirs
• Keynote: Stan Hart, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
• Chair: Marc Hirschmann, Univ. Minnesota, Dept. Geol. Geophys.
  
• A session to address the formation and evolution of geochemical mantle domains.
  
  
• Session 3. High pressure mineral physics
• Keynote: Takehiko Yagi, Earthquake Research Institute, Univ. Tokyo
• Chair: Eiji Ito, Institute for Study of the Earth's Interior, Okayama Univ.
  
• A session to address how the physical properties of terrestrial materials can be used to build realistic models of Earth structure and dynamics.
  
  
• Session 4.Dehydration of subducting slabs and water storage in the mantle
• Keynote: Max Schmidt, CNRS, Clermont-Ferrand/ETH Zuerich
• Chair: Eiji Ohtani, Tohoku Univ.
  
• A session to address issues encompassing the return of materials to the mantle via subducted crust and lithosphere, and the storage of water in the mantle.
  
  
• Session 5. Magmatic differentiation and the evolution of the mantle and core
• Keynote: Eiichi Takahashi, Tokyo Institute of Technology
• Chair: Bernie Wood, Univ. Bristol
  
• A session to address the role of magmatic differentiation in the formation and evolution of major Earth reservoirs.
  
  
• Session 6. Future Perspectives
• Keynote: Ho-kwang Mao, Geophysical Laboratory
• Chair: Dave Rubie, Bayreuth Geoinstitute
  
• A session to address how the various communities can interact in the future to solve existing questions regarding the transport of material in the dynamic Earth.
